Who invented basketball? Most people know the answer. It was James A. Naismith. Naismith was a teacher at the International YMCA Training School in Massachusetts (later called Springfield College). His goal was a new indoor sport.

Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891. He formed the rules. He first used a round ball. Players were to run and dribble the ball. The object of the game was to put the ball into the basket. The basket was a peach basket.

The first peach basket had no bottom. When the ball went into the basket, there was a problem. A ladder had to be used to get the ball. Soon the baskets were changed. A metal rim was added. A net was placed under the metal basket. The ball then would drop down. About 1913, the bottom of the net was closed. The ball did not drop down. A cord was pulled to release the ball.

The first backboards were wooden. Boys played games of full court. The object was to get the ball into the basket. The first games were played indoors. Later, games were played outdoors. The first games had nine players on each team. The first games had no points. Later, points were added. The first official game was played in 1892. The first molded ball of today became official only in 1940.
